We no longer amaze at telephones, computers, Internet, or cars, all of which are now just indispensable to our life. But technologies vary in nature and application, and we should not weight their importance merely in terms of the time of their development.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>First of all, earlier technology and later technology, in many circumstances, are complimentary to each other, and serve different people for various purposes. For example, telephone made its first appearance approximately two centuries ago. Since then, people’s distance and space has been shortened by this amazing invention. Modern technology has made numerous breakthroughs in the field of telecommunication, particularly with the emergence of computer and information technology. A number of the new technologies, in some ways, have taken some of the turf of telephone. The younger generation spends a major part of time talking and communicating via Internet-based technology such as OICQ. Overlapping as the old and new technology in communication, each wouldn’t be complete without the other. As a result, it would not make much sense to judge the significance of technologies only by time. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Second, it would not be fair and reasonable to compare technologies in different fields. Say, does it make any sense to compare engine with computer chip? The former is used in trains, airplanes, and cars, while the later drives computer to perform thousands of tasks. Just pretty much like we could not compare an apple with an orange, we could not logically make comparison between technologies in different fields. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>However, many of the modern technologies do attribute their development to earlier ones. Without the development of power plant, we probably still use candles for light instead of lamp or bulb, not to mention other electricity-powered home appliances.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>In conclusion, old technology and new technology are both important to our life. Even some new technologies are based on older ones, they are developed and used in different areas. It is hard or even unreasonable to compare their significance by the time of their appearance. </DIV></DIV></DIV></DIV></FONT>

Technology enables us to get in touch with each other with unparalleled speed and convenience. But as the oldest and one of the most cherished ways of communication, letter will maintain its presence people’s life instead of disappearing completely. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Letters have a sense of personal touch, which is much less apparent in cell phone and computer communication. The reason is very simple. Letter writing takes considerably longer time than developing an email on a computer. After finishing a letter, people need to drop it in a mailbox or go to a post office to mail it. In modern time, the idea of spending more time on something indicates the importance attached to it. The recipient of a letter, therefore, appreciates it more than answering a call or getting an email from a friend. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>We use letters to send printed or signed documents that could not be delivered by phone talk or computer. Under many business circumstances, contracts or business corespondents could be enclosed in a mail to the other party. In addition, letters correspondences are safer than communicating via phone or computer, both of which could be subjected to information interception by people with ill intention. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Admittedly, the wide use of modern technology in communication has influenced the more traditional way of social contact and information exchange such as letter writing. Still due the uniqueness of letter, it will continue to exist in our life.</DIV>

<DIV>In conclusion, mobile phone and computer have given people superior means of communication, but letter will not disappear completely because it is more personal, safer, and useful than other ways of communication.</DIV></DIV></DIV></FONT>

To combat such problems, government encourages companies to mark up gas price in an effort to decrease car use and cut down waste gas. However it may temporarily alleviate the problem, but is doubtfully the optimal solution.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>First of all, consumers and economy would be victimized by such measures. The number of cars in a country directly depends on the proportion of the population affluent enough to own cars. As a result, raises in gas price could invoke hard feelings among this segment of people but would not drastically change their behavior in using cars. Even if the number of cars on road is reduced due to higher gas cost, this is not the best way to solve traffic problems. Such policy would hurt the auto industry, place higher costs on current and prospect car owners, and undermine the economy of a nation. In the long run, the final way out could be the construction of better roads and more effective use of available transport facilities. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Secondly, there is evidence that waste gas from cars is not the leading cause of air pollution. The culprit may be the discharge of polluting substances into the atmosphere due to the rapidly growing manufacturing industry. As a result, reduction of the number of cars would not return us a blue sky and fresh air. We could better handle this problem if we could increase control over industrial waste discharge and adopt more environmental friendly materials and production equipment. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Finally, other measures like the application of cheaper and cleaner energy resources could also be a better solution. For example, we now have the ability to make cell-powered or even solar-powered cars. Such energy is completely clean and plentiful. However we still have a very long way to go to turn such technologically possible into affordable and practical products. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>To conclude, it is not the best way to control traffic and pollution by increasing gas price because such action will hurt consumers and economy without achieving what it is aimed for. Measures such as construction of better transport facilities and development of new energy resources could be more effective solutions. </DIV></DIV></DIV></DIV></FONT>

<P>The environmental issue is getting worse almost every day in cities with very large population. As is often the case, city development outpaces environmental protection. People consume great amount of natural resouces and produce wastes. To effectively address such problems, cities need to spend big money. In addition, they need to call to the attention of people to become more environmentally responsible. </P>
<P>Many people are becoming less responsible and easily influenced by bad behaviors. “Why should I care while others don’t care?” Such idea makes some people only concern with places where they live and work. Furthermore, people sometimes even purposely litter for revenge to other people. </P>
<P>Although media promotes environmental awareness, good people are often snubbed as posers who try to set up a superior image in real life. Consequently, they are intimated of receiving negative comments for doing the right thing. Wrong as it is, such phenomenon is widespread especially among youngsters and people with low income and little education. </P>
<P>However, our society is waging a campaign against environmental pollution. People learn the harms of undegradable lunch boxes and other polluting wastes. Laws in many countries prohibit or limit excessive use of polluting bags. Companies are continuely replacing the old materials with more environmental friendly and recyclable kinds. Scientists have developed more effective technologies in waste treatment. As time goes by, more and more people put high priority on the protection of environment for a healthier life. </P>
<P>To sum up, people produce huge amount of garbage and the environment is seriously polluted because of lack of financial resources, sense of responsibility, or efforts. But the world will not turn into a “throw away” society if people put in sufficient efforts to protect our environment. </P></DIV></DIV></FONT>
