Hello there. I'm Virginia Cha at the CNN Center in Atlanta with a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
While visiting Kansas City, President Bush told an audience that there are serious signs the economy is weakening. He called numbers in the latest Labor Department jobs report troubling, but says he's confident the US can get through it. That report says 17,000 jobs were cut by employers last month. And there are reports more cuts are on the way.
A new attack in Iraq is shocking not just for the number of casualties but for the way it was carried out. Iraqi officials say two mentally disabled women were strapped into explosive vests which were then detonated by remote control after the women were sent to two separate markets, at least 98 people killed, more than 200 others wounded. Iraqi officials say the women most likely didn't even know they were outfitted with explosives.
These pictures are evidence of the level of desperation in parts of China. Right now, hundreds of thousands of travelers have been trying to push their way onto trains which were shut down for days by one of the worst winter storms of years. The storms have killed at least 60 people and caused blackouts and airport closures all across China.
Forty-five billion dollars! Some might say that's a lot of money to pay for something that only really exists in cyberspace. Well, Microsoft thinks it's worth it. That's what the US software giant is offering for Yahoo. Stock in the Internet search engine which has been down lately soared Friday on the news. Microsoft is offering $44.6 billion in stock and cash for Yahoo. Analysts say it's a bid to counter Google's lead in Internet search advertising.
A huge snow storm that has blanketed the nation's mid section is heading for the Northeast. A state of emergency was declared for fifteen counties in eastern Washington D.C. area yesterday. That region was nearly cut off from the state's west side by mountain avalanches and heavy snow in streets and highways. Authorities are accessing an early morning avalanche on I-90. The Interstate has been blocked since Wednesday because of bad conditions.
And those are the headlines at this hour. Stay with CNN for more on those stories and all your other news of the day.
