What is the name? What it is about? Which type is it? Where and when did you hear it? How often you hear it? Why you like it?
I would like to talk about a classical English song, called Right Here Waiting. It was recommended by my girl (boy) friend when I entered the university. As soon as I heard this song, I liked it very much.
It is sung by Richard Marx, a famous American singer. The song tells a romantic love story. A pair of lovers was separated by oceans. They missed each other very much every day and the telephone couldn’t stop the pain. However, they still loved each other deeply. The time and the distance couldn’t obstruct and reduce their love. Their hearts for the other side couldn’t be changed forever. The man told the girl that he would be right here waiting for her whenever and wherever. I believe this kind of story happens everyday and everywhere among lovers. But I am moved very much by the man’s eternal love.
With accompanied by the piano, in addition to the magnetic voice of Richard Marx, the song sounds very beautiful and it is worth hearing for many times. I love it very much. Now I nearly appreciate the song every day.
The function of the music:
I believe that music is one of the most popular things in the world. It is something that reflects the thoughts and interest of a certain age group or a generation. It is the product of a certain age, but it is also has something universal, something that belongs to all human beings. People like music for some direct reasons: First, for the entertainment. Beautiful and sweet music can make people happy and relaxed. For instance, when I am depressed, listening to my favorite songs help cheer me up. In china or Thailand, music could even be used to cure some illness. Second, for the expression of feelings. Love is an endless topic in most of music. It is a good example that to sing a song or play a music will be a best way to show one’s real feeling. Third, music acts as a mirror of traditional culture of a nation. In china, some old famous music is very popular in the world, which provides an access to the Chinese mysterious cultures for foreigners. In a word, music makes life interesting and colorful.
What type of music is your favorite and why?
I like classical music, country music, light music etc. And I like pop music best. I believe the most important function of music is for entertainment. I am very busy with my study. So everyday, I always enjoy my favorite pop music for about an hour. It can relax me most. However, I don’t like rock and roll because it is too noisy. I prefer gentle swing.
Can music be used to introduce the culture to another country?
Yes, I think so. Music is usually a special window of culture for foreigners. They can learn the customs and cultures by listening to the traditional music. To some extent, the music is the mirror of nation’s culture.
Can music give a rise to a criminal act?
It is hard to say. In my opinion, not all the music has good effect to the audiences. For example, some fans are crazy for some improper rock music, which causes many 123ious social problems. Thus, I think the topics of music should be censored carefully, and some songs which could do harm to one’s spirit should be banned.
What are the differences between the music nowadays and the music of 60s or 70s?
I would talk about the changes of Chinese pop music. In 60s or 70s, people cared much about the hot revolution and spirit of fighting against the nature. So nearly all the songs were about revolutionary topics and expressed people’s admiration for their dear leader. Nowadays, the pop music changes greatly. The topics are more about love, life, friendship and so on.
Do you think it is necessary to open a music course in school?
It is quite necessary. First, it can cultivate children’s appreciation for the beauty of music and arts, which I believe, is the essence of life. Second, it benefits children’s intellectual development as according to some scientific research learning music can accelerate children’s mental development. Third, music courses can provide a change for the children who are already buried in the homework and exam. They offer relaxations as well as knowledge.
