Nature or nurture, which plays the major role in personality and development?
There has been an argument on personality and individual’s development for a long time. The key point of the dispute is which factor plays a more important role, genes or training after birth?

There has been a general debate on the problem as to which nature or nurture plays the major role in personality and individual’s development. Some people claim that nature plays the major role, arguing that genes are important to the individual’s development. Those parties believe in the famous saying “like father, like son”. However, in my point of view, nurture plays the main role in development for the several following reasons:

Firstly, many of the published statistics show that the newborn babies have no apparent major difference and they are all in the same intelligent stage. It is also not absolute that an intelligent couple will have a clever child. Take a look at the example of the great King Liubei in history, who is outstandingly intelligent and capable yet his son (Liu Adou) is not bright as his father that now his name is rather referred to as a fool. There are many cases where intelligent parents do not necessary have clever children. Thus the genes seem not to play crucial roles in people’s development.   

Secondly, it is most likely that the nurture plays major role in both one’s personality and development. A child’s characteristics are likely to be significantly influenced by his parents and teachers who teach and spend most of the time with the child during his development. If he has a happy family life, he is usually optimistic. On contrary, he might become more unsociable. It is evident that if the family pays more attention on his education, he is more likely to get good scores. This proves the importance of the surrounding environment in people’s personality and development during the childhood.

Gernarally speaking, a child’s personality is up to his environment,his development is up to his will and the people around. No one is a genius when he is born; the nurture is curtailed to one’s development. Everyone starts from the same stage at the beginning, and the difference between each individual at the later stage is up to nurture.

There has been a general controversy over which plays the major role in individual’s personality and development, nature or nurture? Some people assume that nature plays the major role without any doubts. They believe that good genes from parents are the most important to the formation of personality and individual’s development. However, as far as I am concerned, it’s nurture that plays the major role in personality and development.

Admittedly, these good genes including intelligence, patience, confidence and leadership etc. inherited from parents are significant factors to a person. However, some recent research has claimed that it is absolutely not the factor which can determine the individual’s personality and development. For example, many people whose mother or father is the famous scientist in the world don’t achieve the same success as their parents did though their parents are all intelligent enough. Their characteristics are also very different with their parents. I’m convinced that the personality and individual’s development can be influenced by other people around them such as parents and teachers. Parents and teachers teach an individual how to interact with other people in the society and what kind of person he should be when he grows up. If a child lives in a happy family, he is usually optimistic. On the contrary, he might be unsociable. Some survey conducted by the education authority department has also clarified that if the parents pay more attention to the study of their child, the child is more likely to get a good score.

Secondly, in my opinion, the systematic education can build one’s personality and influence his development in the future. By this I mean, people usually accept the school education from primary school to university or college. During the period of study at school, the individual can touch all kinds of persons and often interact with different people in school, which can greatly influence the formation of an individual’s personality. Besides, from the classes, lectures or books, the individual learns gradually what kind of person he wants to be and makes the choice of the direction of his development after his graduation.

In summary, an individual’s personality and development is determined by the environment around him. No person can be born genius. Everyone has the almost same personality when he is born, whereas different environment he experiences at a later stage affects the formation of different personality and development.
