Personal Statement
My name is Li Lin. I was born in 1984, the period of China’s economy reform. In the clash between economic development and environmental conservation, I have witnessed the dramatic change in our lives and the environment around us. When the economics is enhanced significantly, we lose the wonderful environment and have to live in a city which is filled with steel and dust. Although the pollution is controlled by government edict, most of the preservation and monitors are not taken into practice.
I entered Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics, majoring Environmental Resources and City Arrangement, with my great enthusiasm for ecology and environment in 2003. During the period of my study in the university, I have grasped basic theory and the elementary operation skills of the resources conservation and the environment plan. Three courses in the study process increased my interest in the environmental resources protection and management: Environmental Science, Resources Scientific Introduction and Environmental Protection Law.
In the class of Environmental Science, as a group, we carried on an item about the investigation and arrangement of campus’ path dustbins. We made a statistics of all the path dustbins in the campus. After that, we replaned the path dustbins and designed reasonable times and routes of clearing. The final achievements were completed by blueprint and the paper form. In this mission, we first had a certain understanding to the environmental resources administration and plan, and it also built a foundation for my deep research on the environmental management. The other course that piqued my interest is Resources Scientific Introductory in which I learned to utilize the fuzzy matrix to carry on the appraisement of an item about resource management. Through the sampling investigation, we took the obtained data into fuzzy matrix processing. Finally we got the estimation of this resource management, which can demonstrate the insufficiency of the management. The data through the processing of this method were objective, and it greatly helped us for the future plan on the resources management. I also took an important course that was related to Environmental Resource Management--Environmental Protection Law. Because the course was taught by a professor who is concerned chiefly with environmental protection, I studied environment law system in China and had a systematic understanding of Chinese environment law. I also had certain knowledge about the international environmental legal regulations which would form into the legal support for our management on the environment and resource in future. In addition, urged by a strong determination to improve myself in basic knowledge and theories, I also studied some correlative basic curriculums, such as GIS, Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development and Environmental Influence Assessment. My undergraduate study was successful and my overall grades were among the top 10% in my class.
To improve my English, I joined a special English class preparing personnel to go abroad for advanced studies. What with my hard work and diligence, I made mighty advances in my English studies. I am sure after a few weeks of adaptation and familiarization I will have no difficulties in functioning on a daily basis in an English-speaking society or in participating fully in postgraduate studies.
Now, I am applying for admission to the School of Environment and Society of Swansea
University. If accepted, I would like to continue my study career and obtain a MSc in Social Development Policy and Management (specialising in the Environment). This degree would enable me to combine a civil servant career with advising business and government on environmental resource management issues.
