委   婉   语   一  角

  假如你到英美人家中作客，女主人将考鸡切开后，可能会问你：Would you
like dark meat or white meat?或许你感到难以回答。原来，这时一句委婉语，dark meat 指鸡腿肉，white meat 是鸡胸肉，分别用来代替Leg 和breast.
  这种用比较含蓄，文雅，幽默话语来表达人们所忌讳的，令人不愉快的事情的语言，被称为委婉语"euphemism",它源于希腊语前缀eu(好）和词根pheme(说话）。在某些场合，死，性，身体某部位，厕所，某些疾病等需要用委婉语来表达。
  big C 表示癌症（cancer),sightless被用来代替blind,用mental home 代替
mental hospital(精神病院）或insane asylum(疯人院）。老人被称为senior
citizen或elderly people, the elderly, 以避免出现old一词。“死亡”一词
是绝大多数人所忌讳的，因此，也就有了很多与之有关的委婉语：depart,
expire（逝世），pass away ,be gone, go to heaven,breathe one"s last(咽气），join the majority, go the way of all fresh,be gone to a better
world 等。
  人们最长见的委婉语莫过于“厕所”的表达了。Men,Women,Ladies,Gentlemen
,Public,Convenience,Comfort Station,Bathroom,Washroom,Rest room,W.C.
Toilet等都是委婉说法。除此以外，也有很多有关“上厕所”的表达方式，如：
go and see my aunt,have a BM,Where can I wash my hands?I"m going to
spend a menny等。课堂上，学生要方便时，可问老师：May I be excused?
在美国口语中，常说wash up,fix my face,power our noses,tidy myself up,
visit John to do No.1job(大便），visit John to do No.2job(小便）等。另外，body refuse, human waste products,excrement等文雅词则用来表达人们不愿提及的排泄物。
