Participation will be structured in terms of Learning Tasks rather than subjects
Learning Tasks will involve structured capacity building activities, group-based research activities, and embedded professional experiences in classroom teaching... blahblahblah...
The Queensland Board of Teacher Registration has given Bond University the go ahead to begin a revolutionary new teacher education program.
Our University has designed a program under which prospective school teachers can study in real schools under real teaching conditions rather than sitting in university lecture theatres.
Bond has formed partnerships with nine Gold Coast schools and the principals of those schools have all welcomed the new teaching technique.
The nine partner schools include Lindisfarne Anglican School, Marymount College, Miami State School, Palm Beach-Currumbin State High School, Palm Beach State School, Robina State High School, St Hilda's, Somerset College and the Southport School.
More schools are expected to join the program in the near future, providing even more diversity in school environments and experiences.
Professor Peter Taylor, the Director of Bond's Institute of Learning Communities, said the program would ensure that headmasters end up with the sort of teachers they want.
"They don't want qualified clockwatchers, they want teachers with a passion for their job, teachers who are prepared to get involved in after-school activities and who are totally committed to teaching young people."
He said staff from each of the participating schools had helped plan and design the program.
Professor Taylor said the 'boutique program' was an Australian first, although similar approaches had been trailed successfully throughout Britain and the US.
"Under the program, the student teachers will see what happens in a real life teaching situation whilst under the care of mentor tutors."
"Those mentors will be working teachers who can help and advise them on any problems they encounter," he said.
"The student teachers will also get to experience all the rough and tumble - and the fun - of the classroom, the playground and events like sports carnivals and excursions."
The new program are open to graduate students and they are required to spend 4 semesters (16 months) of study before emerging with a Master of Education Practice (MEPrac) degree, which is recognized in all Australian states and territories.
The degree is also recognized internationally in all countries which require teacher certification.
The programs are limited to 30 students in each intake and the first students commenced in September this year.
The program costs AUD7,200 per semester, i.e. AUD28,800 for the entire program.
Admission is postgraduate. Participants are expected to show how their undergraduate degree provides the necessary disciplinary basis for the areas in which they wish to teach. For example, an applicant who intends to teach secondary science would be expected to hold an undergraduate degree in science, with subject specializations that are consistent with their preferred teaching areas, whether that be biological science, chemistry, or physics.
Applicants with an education degree may not have the necessary disciplinary knowledge, but that judgment would require careful consideration of the actual subjects completed during that degree.
An IELTS score of no less than 7 has been set for admission. Given that the program will be taught in English, and all participants will spend considerable time working in Australian schools, fluency and confidence in both spoken (informal) and written English are essential prerequisites for admission.
