Nowadays, TV has become an essential part of human’s life. However, a lot of today’s parents try to use television as a pacifier for their children when they don’t have time to stay with their children. They put their children in front of the set and don’t care whether the children exposed to rubbishy commercials or spectacles of violence as long as the children are quiet. This essay will outline the main reasons for this phenomenon and suggest some possible solutions.
The main reason for that is today’s parents is different from the old days. In old days, women are only allowed to stay home and take care of their children day to days.
In this modern society, women have got more freedom since more and more women go out to work instead of being a full time housewife and taking care of children. Both parents need to go to work to make money for supporting the families. Therefore, the parents don’t have enough time to stay with children.
The second reason is parents believe that most of the TV programs are quite helpful to children’s mental development because these programs can broaden children’s horizon and enrich their life experience. For example, programs such as Discovery and National Geography are so enlightening and fascinating for children can be absorbed in.
However, spending too much time in front of TV without paternal guidance will be very harmful for children because they have no ability to distinguish goodness and badness. Excessive violence and obscene materials set up bad examples for children. Moreover, watching TV for a long time regularly will cause children myopia and they will isolate themselves, no longer communicate with others.
As far as the problem concerned, possible solutions that worth mentioning are parents should restrict the freedom of children watching TV or they can send the children to join interest classes.
Parents should design a schedule for children about what time is appropriate to watch TV such as when they finish homework, only watch 2 hours at a time or 9am in the morning. When I was child, my parents sent me to interest classes where I can meet more friends and absorb more knowledge outside the school when they did not have time to look after me. Also, government should restrict the TV Company about publishing commercials and violent scenes.
In conclusion, it will be positive for children watching TV with paternal guidance otherwise, it will be negative if they watch TV alone and for a long time. The best way is parent should try to spend more time with children not just watch TV but other activities.
