“Should countries encourage tourism” Discuss
A matter of considerable controversy at present is the issue of whether countries should encourage tourism or not. Strong arguments exist in support of both sides of this debate, which implies that it is worth examining both points of view before reaching any conclusions.
In the first place, tourism is now becoming a boom industry in many countries. It is obvious that it leads to the development of hotels and shopping facilities, and this creates job opportunities for local people-jobs which would not otherwise exist. Since visitors are especially fond of examples of local crafts, a number of new industries tend to be developed to meet this demand. Furthermore, the arrival of visitors always leads to improvements in docks, airports and roads. Local people then benefits from these improvements themselves. Meanwhile, the amusement parks, zoos and other amenities gradually develop to attract more and more tourists.
Moreover, it is widely claimed that by travelling you can go to beautiful spots to enjoy the beauty of nature and the special character of other cities. You can breathe fresh air, meet different people and make friends with them. With the frequent contact between people from different places and different nations, the exchange of culture and science is bound to be promoted, possibly leading to the better understanding of peoples all over the world.
However, traveling is not an enjoyable thing. For example, over-development leads to ugly, crowded tourist spots and environmental damage, and the impact of tourism may destroy the local way of life as well.
A secind negative aspect of tourism is that a country’s economy may become so dependent on tourism that it is weakened. Although tourism is an important source of income in many countries which have developed their economy by focusing on tourism, more and more natural resources will destroyed by tourism and no longer attract visitors.
All things considered, there is evidence both to support and refute the view that countries should encourage tourism. On the one hand, not only the visitors but also the local peoples can get benefits from the tourism. On the other hand, it perheps leads to a lot of problems on governments.
